How ldsmaps.org Radar Technology Works

The ldsmaps.org meteorological radar engine ingests raw volumetric radar scans from ground-based dual-polarization radar stations across the world, including NEXRAD (US), OPERA (Europe), and JMA (Japan). Our algorithms calibrate clutter filters, removing non-meteorological echoes like birds, aircraft, and terrain backscatter.

Dual-polarization technology transmits pulses along both horizontal and vertical wave orientations. By analyzing the pulse ratio, our systems distinguish between spherical raindrops, tumbling hailstones, and crystalline snowflakes, ensuring precise local forecasting.
